Setting up Tableau desktop – Setting Up Salesforce with Tableau

Tableau Desktop is an application you need to download and install from the web. You can get a 14-day trial for free, but you must first sign up for a Tableau Online Account and create a test site. If you need more than 14 days for your learning journey, you can download the Tableau Public Desktop application, which has almost the same functionality but can only be used with Tableau Public, described below.

To set up a Tableau Online account, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to https://www.tableau.com/
  2. Click TRY TABLEAU FOR FREE. This will send you to the trial form, as shown below:

  1. Fill in the required information in the form and click the Request Free Trial button:

  1. You will now receive an email with a link to create a new Tableau Site. Click on that link.
  2. Click CREATE OR LOG IN TO TABLEAU (Figure 2.6):

  1. Click CREATE AN ACCOUNT (Figure 2.7):

  1. Fill in the form and click CREATE MY ACCOUNT, as can be seen in the following figure:

  1. Now sign in with your new credentials, as shown in the following figure:

  1. Fill out the information about your test site. Pick the site location nearest to you. Click ACTIVATE NOW when you are done, as shown in the following figure:

  1. You have now created your Tableau account and test site. You can close any pop-ups that appear without any actions, as per the following figure.

You can now proceed to download and install Tableau Desktop. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. From your Tableau site, click the link Download Tableau Desktop, as shown in the following figure:

  1. Click the link to view the current version. Refer the following figure:

  1. Click the link to download Tableau Desktop. Take a look at the following figure:

  1. Pick the version for Windows or Mac, depending on what platform you use, as shown in the following figure:

  1. Open the downloaded file to start the installation, as shown in the following figure:

  1. Click to accept the license agreement, then click Install. Refer the following figure:

  1. Once the installation is complete, fill in the form and click Start Trial Now. Take a look at the following figure:

You have now successfully installed Tableau Desktop, and we just have one final hurdle to complete before we can check that everything works, creating an account for Tableau Public.
